But we must understand that anodizing is a chemical reaction, not a digital print.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Variables We Fight Against<\/h3><p>There are dozens of variables in the factory that change the outcome.<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Immersion Time:<\/strong>\u00a0If the worker leaves the part in the dye tank for 2 minutes instead of 1 minute and 50 seconds, the color will be darker. We use automated timers, but manual lines still exist in China.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Tank Chemistry:<\/strong>\u00a0As we process thousands of parts, the dye gets used up. The pH level changes. We have to constantly monitor and add chemicals to keep the balance. If the balance shifts slightly, the shade shifts.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Temperature:<\/strong>\u00a0The dye tank must be kept at a specific temperature. If it gets too cold, the dye does not penetrate well.<\/li><\/ol><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;Limit Sample&#8221; Strategy<\/h3><p>Since zero variation is impossible, how do we do business? We use &#8220;Limit Samples&#8221; or &#8220;Range Boards.&#8221;<br>When we start a project, I send the client three samples:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Light Limit:<\/strong>\u00a0The lightest shade acceptable.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong>\u00a0The perfect shade.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Dark Limit:<\/strong>\u00a0The darkest shade acceptable.<\/li><\/ul><p>As long as the production parts fall between the Light and Dark limits, the batch is good. This aligns our expectations with reality. If you demand a &#8220;Target only&#8221; match, your scrap rate (and price) will triple.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rack Marks<\/h3><p>Another consistency issue is rack marks. We have to hold the part with titanium clips to pass the electricity. Where the clip touches the part, there is no anodizing. It leaves a small silver mark. We must discuss where to hide this mark during the design phase.
